Ghati & Aghati (घाती · अघाती)
"The Architecture of Karma"
Understanding the two fundamental categories of karma that bind the soul to worldly existence and the path to ultimate transcendence.
Destructive (Ghati) Karmas
These four types of karmas directly obstruct the inherent, infinite qualities of the soul. Their total destruction marks the transition from a mundane soul to an omniscient being.
"The destruction of all 4 Ghati karmas leads to Omniscience (Kevala Jnana)."
Knowledge Obscuring (Jnanavaraniya)
Obstructs the soul's power of infinite knowledge, like a veil covering a bright lamp.
Perception Obscuring (Darshanavaraniya)
Prevents the soul from experiencing pure, undifferentiated perception.
Deluding (Mohaniya)
The 'King' of karmas, causing attachment and confusion about reality.
Power Obstructing (Antaraya)
Karmas that prevent the manifestation of the soul's infinite energy and the performance of good deeds even when the intent exists.

The Path to Omniscience
"Upon the complete annihilation of the 4 Ghati Karmas, the soul attains Kevala Jnana. The individual becomes an Arihant—a Victor."
Non-Destructive (Aghati) Karmas
These karmas do not touch the soul's nature but define its external environment and biological body. They remain even after Kevala Jnana is attained.
Eternal liberation (Nirvana) involves shedding these remaining 4 karmas at the end of the final physical life.
Feeling-Producing (Vedaniya)
Responsible for experiences of worldly pleasure (Shata) or pain (Ashata).
Body-Determining (Nama)
Determines the physical body's form, appearance, and generic characteristics.
Status-Determining (Gotra)
Dictates the social environment and family lineage of the birth.
Life-Span (Ayu)
Defines the duration of the current life in a particular realm.
Final Liberation (Nirvana)
When the omniscient soul sheds the remaining four Aghati karmas, it leaves the body forever. This moment of ultimate release leads to Moksha—the state of eternal bliss and liberation from the cycle of birth and death.
Kevala Jnana
Omniscience while in a body. Occurs after Ghati karma destruction.
Nirvana
Total bodiless liberation. Occurs after Aghati karma destruction.
