Gunsthanaks (गुणस्थानक)
"The 14 Stages of the Soul"
The soul's journey — from the dark depths of total ignorance to the infinite light of complete liberation.
The Ascent of the Soul
In Jain philosophy, the journey of the soul is not a random occurrence but a structured climb toward divinity. Most beings reside between stage 1 and 3, cycling through perceptions of reality without reaching the clarity of truth.
The Current State
"The transition from the first to the fourth stage is the most monumental shift a conscious entity can experience—the dawn of Right Faith."
The 14 Stages
Mithyatva
Delusion
The state of complete spiritual ignorance. The soul identifies entirely with the body and material world.
Saswadana
Lingering Taste
A momentary falling back from right faith, where a memory of truth still lingers before descent.
Misra
Mixed Belief
A fluctuating state of doubt, oscillating between truth and delusion. Unstable and transitional.
Avirata Samyagdristi
Vowless Right Belief
The Great Awakening. The soul finally realizes its true nature distinct from matter, though it lacks the self-control to take formal vows.
The Practitioner
- 05: Partial Self-Control
- 06: Slight Imperfection
- 07: Perfect Self-Control
- 08-10: Subduing Passions
The Path of Arhats
Nearing Omniscience
Stages where all negative karma is either suppressed or destroyed. The soul achieves Sayoga Kevali—Omniscience with activity.
14: Ayoga Kevali
The cessation of all activity. For a brief moment, the soul prepares for Siddhashila—the permanent state of infinite knowledge, bliss, and power.
"As a man climbing a mountain sees the world differently at every step, the soul perceives Truth with increasing clarity as it ascends the Gunsthanaks."
